Sasso Simone and Simoncello
The hinterland you do not expect a few tens of kilometers from the coasts of Romagna and Marche, among millenary woods, villages and typical cuisine.
The area of the Natural Park of Sasso Simone develops less than 50 km from the Riviera Romagnola, reachable along various panoramic roads that allow photographic and culinary stops.
One of the most popular access points is located in Passo Cantoniera, between Carpegna and Pennabilli, where there is an Adventure Park and a good Il Mandriano restaurant. Passo Cantoniera is located at 1000 meters above sea level, and is therefore an excellent place to go to “cool off” on hot summer days, while in winter it is very cold and windy. The most popular route is certainly the path 117, which from Passo Cantoniera leads, passing through the Sella dei Sassi, to the top of Sasso Simoncello. From the top the view sweeps over the wild hinterland of Montefeltro, the nearby Monte Carpegna, Monte Nerone recognizable by its large antennas, the long ridge of the Alpe della Luna up to the Casentino. The paths in the Entiata Forest, ancient name of the great cerreta, the second largest in Europe, can be traveled all year round with the right equipment, to face even extreme conditions and the rough and often muddy terrain, especially the boots, the our choice fell on AKU boots thanks to their characteristics capable of guaranteeing ideal grip and comfort for the routes in question
For those who are more prepared and equipped from the Sella dei Sassi you can go up to Simoncello, the path is equipped in the most exposed passages that require a firm foot and presence of mind, the top offers a view of the badlands to the west, where at sunset you can often to see the wolves run.
The efforts that will be faced will be rewarded by breathtaking views, encounters with wildlife and the atmosphere of the ancient forest.
It should be remembered that there is a military polygon in the area, which limits access on midweek days. To be sure, just stop in the municipality of Carpegna and ask for information at the Visitor Center.
