The Plate Carrier
Since the Bronze Age the soldier has tried to protect the vital areas of the torso and head. Now it is called Plate Carrier
Archaeological finds have brought to light numerous variants of “cuirasses”, from bronze plates hung with leather straps to real multilayer linen corsets, up to the cuirasses of the Greek hoplites. From the hoplitic phalanxes we move on to the Legions of Rome, which develop different types of armor, from chain mail, to scaled armor to the famous “lorica segmentata” work of art in terms of protection and functionality.
The first image that comes to mind from the Middle Ages is the heavy knight, armored from head to toe, although it is correct to remember that the use of armor of that kind dates back to the late period, around 1400. Armor which, it has been shown by various tests, were much more mobile and functional than previously believed, but which will give way to the appearance of firearms. the cuirasses are reduced, due to lack of funds and the need for lightness, until they disappeared almost until the 1900s. The Great War rekindled the need to protect at least some departments, see the wire cutters, with metal armor such as the “Farina armor”. Heavy and impractical armor, certainly not suitable for the assaults of the trenches.
In the Second World War, armor was experimented, but never for mass use, strange case the armor for Soviet assault troops …
In Korea troops are beginning to be equipped with “flak jackets” in ballistic nylon, for protection from shrapnel, but not very effective against bullets. The same can be said of the evolution of the same in Vietnam.
In the 80s with the PASGT, the Americans began to use Kevlar as ballistic protection, which then evolved to this day, passing through the various theaters of war in the Middle East. Since the beginning of the War on Terror, the evolution and functionality of bulletproof protections have been adapted to asymmetrical warfare and new operational needs.
Our favorite plate carriers are the Direct Action as they are the lightest and most functional that soldiers (not just Special Forces) can ask for. The possibility to set and completely customize the plate carrier, depending on the role or mission, with side bands (cummerband), magazine pouches, IFAK, pockets and most importantly ballistic plates, the most used the Level III, the real heart of the plate.
Below is an explanatory table.
NIJ levels of protection
In ascending order of protection:
- Level I: (.22 LR; .380 ACP) This armor protects from .22 caliber Long Rifle Round nose (40 grain) bullets at a velocity of 329 m / s and from .380ACP Full Metal Jacket RN (95 grains) caliber bullets at a velocity of approximately 322 m / s . It is no longer part of the standards (it is too light).
- Level IIa: (9 mm; .40 S&W) Protects from 9×19 Parabellum Full Metal Jacket Round Nose (FMJ RN) (124 grains) bullets at a speed of approximately 373 m / s and from .40S & W caliber bullets (180 grains) at a speed of approximately 325 m / s. It also protects against the threats listed in Level I.
- Level II: (9 mm; .357 Magnum) Protects from 9mm FMJ RN (124 grain) bullets at a speed of 398 m / s and from .357 Magnum Jacketed Soft Point (JSP) caliber bullets (158 grains) at a speed of approximately 436 m / s. It also protects against threats listed in levels IIa and I.
- Level IIIa: (.357 Mr; .44 Magnum) Protects from .357 SIG Flat Nose (FN) caliber bullets (125 grains) at a speed of 448 m / s and from .44 Magnum Semi-jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) caliber bullets (240 grains) at a speed of about 436 m / s. It also protects against most pistol bullets, but also from the threats listed in the previous levels (I, IIa and II).
- Tier III: (Rifles) Protects from 7.62x51mm NATO bullets (M80 ammunition) (148 grains) at a speed of approximately 847 m / s. It also protects against the threats listed in the previous levels (I, IIa, II, IIIa).
- Tier IV: (Piercing Rifles) Protects from .30 caliber 06 Springfield M2 Armor Piercing (AP) bullets weighing 166 grains (approximately 10.7 grams), at a speed of 878 m / s. Provides protection from the threats mentioned in all previous armor levels.
